Spring/Summer 2026 was defined by color and fearless color combinations, lively textures and sculptural shapes, underpinned by a strong ’90s influence. Some of those silhouettes will carry into fall, but with a shift in mood: the lightness and ease of summer are giving way to stronger structure.
Shapes will be rounded, oversized and sculptural. At the same time, sharply fitted trousers will provide a sleek counterpoint to more voluminous tops. Rather than one dominant silhouette, Fall 2026 offers several distinct ways to play with proportion.
The focus on the waist and hips continues. The peplum shapes seen in spring remain relevant, while low-rise waistlines are back in the spotlight. Exaggerated shoulders also retain their power. Strong tailoring and a renewed take on power dressing run throughout the season, from trouser suits and skirt suits to knee-length skirts worn with crisp button-down shirts.
Materials and Layering
If Summer 2026 was the season of fringe, tassels and ruffles, Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 will be remembered for materiality and layering. Cut still matters, but surface, texture and movement are equally important. The season’s fabrics range from winter wool and dramatic velvet to denim, lace and sheer materials. The key is also in combining different materials.
Knitwear plays a leading role, and we’re seeing a lot of wool fabrics, from coats and scarves to mittens. Denim is worn head-to-toe, while lace ranges from delicate and transparent to dense and substantial.
Layering serves a practical purpose, but warmth is only part of the story. Designers used layers to reveal how garments are constructed and to let a look evolve throughout the day. Shirt hems deliberately extend beneath jackets and tops, while zip-front knits make an outfit easy to transform, revealing an entirely different look underneath. Sheer dressing is another major theme, but it is less about exposing skin than about building depth through overlapping layers and structures.
Colors and Prints
Bold color is not disappearing for Fall 2026. Strong primary shades and unexpected combinations remain visible, although neutrals form the foundation of the season.

1. Oversized, Protective Winter Coats

Large, dramatic coats made for cocooning will be big news in Fall and Winter 26-27 — in every sense of the word. This trend is not merely striking; it is practical, too, making it perfectly suited to northern winters.
The defining feature of a cocoon coat is its rounded cut: fuller through the shoulders and tapering toward the hem. The silhouette works equally well in wool and padded outerwear, while sculptural construction adds another layer of impact.
Statement coats appeared at Loewe, where the shapes were plush and voluminous; Erdem, with a giant fringed design; and Ferragamo, which showed oversized trench, leather and wool coats. Louis Vuitton explored sculptural silhouettes and rounded blousons, Tory Burch offered trench coats and double-breasted styles, and outerwear dominated the Burberry show. 2. Denim in Every Form

Denim is one of the season’s most important stories. Expect head-to-toe denim, layered denim and a full wardrobe of denim jackets, shirts, coats, shorts and miniskirts—not to mention jeans.
At Proenza Schouler, a peplum denim jacket was paired with straight-leg jeans. Erdem favored a wider, low-rise silhouette. Dolce & Gabbana showed distressed, wide-leg denim, while Dior presented gray and ultra-light embellished styles. Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Isabel Marant all included narrower cuts. Marant’s collection also featured denim minis, and a blouson worn with colorful jeans, as pictured.
Slimmer jeans are making a return, but wide legs are not going anywhere. The new narrow shapes are straight, slim and cigarette-cut; it is not quite time for a full skinny-jean comeback. Washes range from pale and mid-blue to deep indigo, alongside more adventurous color: red, the brown seen at Altuzarra and the cobalt blue spotted at Chloé.

If Spring/Summer 2026 is remembered for florals and exuberant color, plaid and check will be among the defining trends of Fall/Winter 2026–2027. The runways offered both full plaid looks and outfits in which only the top or bottom carried the print. Palettes ranged from gray, black and white to brown and beige, with brighter interpretations in shades of purple. Scale varied, too: neat, traditional checks appeared alongside oversized and deliberately irregular patterns.
Plaid is easy to introduce through one statement piece, particularly in gray, brown, beige or muted purple.
4. Trouser Suits and Tuxedo Details

Trouser suits were everywhere on the Fall/Winter 2026–2027 runways. The most visible symbol of the trend is surely Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking, the women’s tuxedo introduced in 1966 and celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026. The first eight looks in the house’s show were all black trouser suits.
Other designers and fashion houses embraced suiting just as enthusiastically. Gucci presented a glossy pinstripe version, while Tom Ford also worked with pinstripes, as pictured. Givenchy showed both peplum-shaped suits and more masculine double-breasted pinstripes in purple, gray and black. Tuxedo influences also appeared at Khaite and McQueen in the form of bow details.
5. Transformative Layers and Sheer Fabrics

This trend is not simply about a sheer garment or bare skin. Its real focus is an outfit built from multiple layers—one that can change with the time of day, the occasion or the way it is styled. Layering, in other words, becomes both useful and expressive.
Prada offered a compelling example, peeling back each look one layer at a time. In the outfit pictured, a zip-front knit was removed to reveal a dress; beneath it sat another dress, followed by a top-and-skirt combination. Zip knits also appeared at Chanel and Etro. Tom Ford took a different approach, layering translucent, plastic-like materials to striking effect.
6. The Modern Skirt Suit

The sixth trend is the modern skirt suit: a freer pairing of jacket and skirt rather than a rigid office uniform. This combination appeared repeatedly across the collections.
What makes the look modern is that the top and bottom do not necessarily use the same fabric. Proportions are more fluid, too—the jacket need not end at a prescribed point, nor the pencil skirt hit precisely at the knee. Styling is looser and more individual. Ferragamo’s interpretation is pictured.
At Chanel, colorful boxy tweed jackets were paired with e.g. open-weave skirts, while longer jackets met low-rise skirts defined by belts. There was sparkle, too. Lanvin introduced ruffles and asymmetry; Proenza Schouler emphasized lapels; and Tom Ford and Gucci showed sleek white suits that followed the body and defined the waist. Celine moved between close-fitting dark looks and boxier tops.
7. The Many Faces of the Midi Skirt

The midi skirt is one of Fall 2026’s most visible pieces. Because the runways offered many more midi looks than skirt suits alone, it deserves a category of its own. The below-the-knee skirt can now be styled in countless ways.
Some outfits combined a button-down shirt, full midi skirt, belt, boots, gloves and turtleneck. Acne Studios paired the midi with a turtleneck and cropped top. Skirts dominated at Chanel, often with a dropped waist, while Stella McCartney favored the classic pencil skirt. The peplum shapes seen in Spring/Summer 2026 continue into fall. This time, the waist is defined through peplum denim tops, leather jackets and tailored jackets alike. Elsewhere, sculptural cuts emphasize the hips, making the waist appear narrower or drawing it in with a belt.
Alaïa was a standout for sculptural construction, as was the striking Jacquemus look pictured. At Dior, peplums played a visible role throughout the fall collection. Givenchy continued to explore hourglass cuts, while Stella McCartney used peplums on both dresses—sometimes paired with over-the-knee boots—and blazers. Proenza Schouler brought the shape to denim jackets, and Valentino defined the waist with belts.
9. Fall Fashion Trends 2026: The Return of Slim Tailoring

Leaner tailoring is rising alongside oversized shapes and body-enveloping volume. That contrast is one of the most interesting observations of the season: Fall 2026 is rich in shifting proportions.
Celine showed slim lines alongside its more voluminous looks. Gucci stayed close to the body with slim trousers and even a fleeting appearance by a couple of skinny styles. Jil Sander maintained a clean, narrow line; Tom Ford focused on elongated, close-cut silhouettes; and Proenza Schouler also moved closer to the body.
Roomier cuts are not disappearing. A fitted layer can sit beneath a larger coat, for example. The point is to remove unnecessary volume: jackets become shorter or narrower, the waist gains definition and garments follow the body’s architecture. 10. Exaggerated Shoulders

Louis Vuitton presented a protective, supersized shoulder line, pictured above. The trend does not necessarily require an entirely oversized garment; the effect can come simply from extending the shoulders.
Stella McCartney offered a more traditional interpretation, with jackets and shirts built around a clearly structured shoulder. Tory Burch and Issey Miyake brought strong shoulders to knitwear. Carolina Herrera paired rounded shoulders with animal print, another notable motif, while Valentino showed several padded tops. Mugler explored the same powerful line.
11. High, Face-Framing Collars

High collars are back in force. They connect naturally with the season’s protective winter coats, but the runways also offered turtlenecks, decorative funnel necks, short stand collars, ruffled collars and draped constructions. Together, they make a strong case for face-framing necklines as a trend in their own right.
Khaite look featured a military-inspired stand collar. At Balenciaga, oversized funnel necks rose high around the face. Acne Studios showed both turtlenecks and aviator jackets with teddy collars. Max Mara sent out wool coats with collars simply turned upward, while Altuzarra experimented with soft draping. Erdem’s dramatic lace ruff brought a historical note to the trend.
12. Fall Fashion Trends 2026: The Drop Waist

The drop waist emerged as one of the season’s clearest standalone silhouette trends. Chanel provided the most extreme example, moving the waistline very low and emphasizing it with a belt.
Marni also used belts to draw attention to a lowered waist, while Tory Burch introduced the shape in dresses. On Erdem’s ornate gowns, straight bodices extended low before giving way to the skirt. Ferragamo used gathering to define a low line across the hips.

Lace appeared in sheer dresses, high collars, layered skirts and beneath tailored pieces. Saint Laurent showed lace alongside delicate, body-skimming midi dresses, skirts and tops with a lace-like effect. Dior layered it through skirts, Chloé used it as edging, and Tom Ford juxtaposed it with bright, transparent materials.
Velvet, meanwhile, moved beyond evening gowns and into trouser suits, jackets, tops and long skirts. Giorgio Armani, for example, showed complete velvet looks. The two fabrics did not always appear in the same outfit, but they served the same broader direction: lace reveals and layers; velvet conceals and deepens. Both are particularly compelling in the season’s black, burgundy and eggplant tones.

14. Over-the-Knee Boots

Over-the-knee boots deserve a trend of their own because of how frequently they appeared on the runways. The new version is not necessarily tight or second-skin; instead, it feels integrated into the outfit itself.
This fall, the boot functions almost like a garment—a protective layer that makes miniskirts, dresses and shorts wearable deeper into the season. Hermès paired over-the-knee boots with minis and shorts, as well as over close-fitting trousers. 15. Scarf Dressing for Fall 2026

Silk scarves were everywhere in summer, moving beyond accessories to become part of the clothes themselves. The scarf trend continues into Fall 2026.
Scarves appeared as garments—Altuzarra turned one into a top—as well as integral parts of an outfit. They were tied at the hips at Etro and Zimmermann, draped over the shoulders at Missoni and worn more traditionally at the neck at Stella McCartney, Prada and McQueen.
