Kahvitupa Laurentius is one of the most charming brunch spots in the Helsinki metropolitan area – at least when it comes to the atmosphere and surroundings. Located in the historic Helsinki Parish Village, the café operates in an early 19th-century farmhouse called Hannusas, which stands out thanks to its uniquely cozy ambiance.
The building is old and full of history, and the interior radiates warmth and homeliness. This is not a modern, fast-paced brunch restaurant, but rather a place where time seems to slow down. The surrounding area is peaceful as well, and during summer the setting is likely even more beautiful. Its location near Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and Jumbo shopping center, yet still just a short distance from Helsinki, makes Kahvitupa Laurentius an excellent destination for a weekend brunch in the capital region.
The café is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and despite its name, it offers much more than just coffee. On weekdays, lunch is served, while weekends are reserved for brunch. In addition, the menu includes à la carte dishes and wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas. Those with a sweet tooth can also enjoy a selection of gelato, desserts, and pastries.
Weekend brunch – what does Kahvitupa Laurentius offer?
We had heard many good things about the brunch at Kahvitupa Laurentius, so we decided to try it out with a group of friends.
The Italian-inspired brunch includes:
- Croissants and focaccia
- Salads and fruits
- Antipasto-style delicacies such as cheeses and cold cuts
- Two different lasagnas and pizza
- A glass of prosecco, coffee, and gelato
We arrived about ten minutes early. The staff were busy putting the finishing touches on the setup, and a small queue started forming at the entrance. After a short wait, we were shown to our table. The staff introduced the brunch selection and poured prosecco or Pommac into our glasses.
The dining room is not particularly large, so getting food was smooth without major queues, as the tables seemed to take turns heading to the buffet one at a time.
There were plenty of options available, and our plates filled up quickly. The pizzas included varieties such as margherita and salami pizza, while the lasagna was available in both minced meat and mushroom versions. The food was delicious and showcased Italian flavors very well. We even went back for second servings, although the hearty dishes filled us up quickly. The gelato served for dessert was also absolutely delightful.
The brunch seating time of one and a half hours is probably sufficient, as you do get full rather quickly. However, we ended up staying closer to two hours before we were ready to leave. We had chosen the 2:00 PM brunch seating and were able to sit peacefully even though the service was officially said to end at 3:30 PM. For a calmer brunch experience, the later seating may be the better option.
The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and the service friendly. The tables are placed fairly close together, so there is not a huge amount of extra space, but personally I did not find this particularly bothersome.
Is Kahvitupa Laurentius worth visiting?
The brunch at Kahvitupa Laurentius was definitely worth experiencing. The combination of good food and a unique atmosphere made the visit memorable. In terms of variety and quality, I think the brunch is well worth its price.
The à la carte menu and dessert display also looked very tempting, so I could easily imagine returning here again – perhaps for coffee during a walk, to enjoy pizza on the terrace in the summer, or for an Italian dinner.
