A good clarifying shampoo can be a valuable addition to your haircare routine, especially if you regularly use styling products or dry shampoo. Clarifying shampoos are generally more effective than regular shampoos at removing styling product residue and buildup from the hair and scalp. Misaij has tested the highly praised Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo. Here is our review of the product, including its pros and cons.
Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo
What does the product promise? Olaplex Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo is a clarifying shampoo designed to remove product residue, excess oil, chlorine, heavy metals, minerals, and other buildup from the hair. The product also promises to leave hair soft and shiny without drying it out. The shampoo is part of Olaplex’s Bond Maintenance range and features the brand’s proprietary Bond Building technology. The product is suitable for all hair types, including colour-treated and chemically treated hair. Olaplex’s clarifying shampoo is also formulated to help maintain hair colour. In addition, it is vegan, sulfate-free, and free from phthalates, silicones, and parabens.
What are sulfates?*
Surfactants are key ingredients in shampoos and play a major role in how shampoos work. Anionic surfactants foam well and effectively cleanse away dirt and oil. Common anionic surfactants include sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS, and sodium laureth sulfate, SLES. Although surfactants can dry out the skin and increase the likelihood of skin irritation, the overall formulation of the shampoo is what matters most.
In sulfate-free shampoos, SLS or SLES can be replaced with milder surfactants, such as Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate. Alternative surfactants are often more expensive than traditional sulfate-based ingredients, and sulfate-free shampoos may require more complex surfactant systems to achieve similar foaming performance. Being sulfate-free does not automatically mean that a product is gentler.
How to use the shampoo
- Apply to damp hair and lather thoroughly.
- Leave on for up to 5 minutes.
- Rinse, then follow with conditioner.
- Use once a week instead of your regular shampoo, or whenever your hair needs a more thorough cleanse. Daily use may be too intense and could dry out the hair.
Olaplex No. 4C Clarifying Shampoo Review
The shampoo has a wonderfully fresh scent and feels luxurious to use. It lathers easily and produces a rich, nice foam. I must admit that I haven’t followed the full five-minute leave-on time recommended on the packaging; instead, I usually shampoo my hair twice, leaving the second wash on for slightly longer. Immediately after washing, the hair does feel dry and rough, so following up with a good conditioner is essential. The conditioner also seems to absorb into the hair very quickly. During blow-drying, the hair feels noticeably lighter and more airy, and brushing becomes effortless.
In my experience, Olaplex’s clarifying shampoo removes buildup very effectively and leaves the hair feeling fresh, light, and thoroughly cleansed. Once dry, the hair feels clean without feeling stripped or uncomfortably dry. On the contrary, the hair feels soft and smooth, provided that a sufficiently moisturising conditioner is used afterwards. Interestingly, the hair colour also appears brighter and more vibrant after use. I did not experience any scalp irritation, and despite its deep-cleansing effect, the formula still feels relatively gentle.
The only notable drawback is the rather high price point, but otherwise this is an excellent clarifying shampoo that performs as promised.
